Ohio: Caller Used Spoofed Call Threatening Ohio State Representative To Resign

Incident

An unknown caller phoned an Ohio state representative last weekend using the tricked phone number of her father, a state legislator and told her to quit, or he would kill her father.

Akron police confirmed on Tuesday that Ohio House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes received the call over the weekend, threatening her or her father, Vernon Sykes. Still, the details were not delivered until Friday as the result of an open records request by the Akron Beacon-Journal.

Using Father’s Phone Number

The police documents say the call to Emilia Sykes came from her father’s phone number, and the caller warned to kill him unless she resigned. The suspect also warned her against calling law enforcement.

Emilia Sykes quickly phoned her father’s number after hanging up the call, and he answered. He told law enforcement that he had received a call from an unknown number about 15 minutes before his daughter called, and that call was disconnected.

It is believed that caller IDs can be tricked from unknown numbers and advises people not to answer calls from numbers they don’t recognize.

Voice

According to the police documents, the caller had a southern male voice.

Syke’s Accomplishments

Both Emilia Sykes, who was elected to the state House seat her father held for years in 2014, and Vernon Sykes, who was elected to the state Senate in 2016, refused to comment.

Emilia Sykes clinched the spotlight in Ohio recently, criticizing DeWine’s plans to deal with the coronavirus’s excessive impact on black Ohioans. Sykes, who is a lawyer and holds a master’s degree in public health, said DeWine’s plan was too little too late.
